GPT Live: OpenAI's Smarter Voice for ChatGPT

OpenAI has launched GPT Live, a smarter voice system for ChatGPT. This new system allows ChatGPT to listen and talk at the same time, making conversations much smoother. It replaces the older voice feature and introduces two new models, GPT Live 1 and GPT Live 1 mini. Unlike the previous version, which was turn-based, GPT Live constantly listens and decides when to reply, pause, or even interrupt. This improves the flow of conversation and enables features like live translation. Users can also interrupt the assistant, ask it to slow down, or tell it to remain quiet. For complex tasks, the voice model can silently pass requests to GPT-5.5 while continuing the conversation. OpenAI has also updated its nine built-in voices. GPT Live is rolling out globally across Android, iOS, the web, and Apple CarPlay. It includes enhanced safety features, with human testers rating it higher for natural conversation. The system can also work better in noisy environments and handle longer pauses. OpenAI has added specific safety checks for voice conversations, addressing topics like self-harm, violence, and emotional dependence on AI. This means the system can steer conversations in safer directions or provide helpful information. This upgrade aims to make interacting with ChatGPT feel more natural and secure for everyone.
