IBM Lightwell: Free AI Security for US Institutions

IBM is offering its AI security service, Lightwell, for free to hundreds of US institutions. This includes over 185 US research universities and 100 NGOs and think tanks. Here's the thing: Lightwell helps address vulnerabilities in open-source software. It uses generative AI and human expertise to find and fix weaknesses. Eligible institutions get digitally signed fixes for their current software versions, avoiding disruptive upgrades. What's interesting is the service works within an institution's existing environment. It doesn't require IBM or Red Hat to access proprietary data. Participants also receive source code, validated binaries, and compliance documentation. IBM and Red Hat launched Project Lightwell in May 2026 with a five-billion-dollar commitment. The library has since grown to over 8,000 validated package versions, including fixes for 64 previously unknown vulnerabilities. Fixes are also submitted to the original open-source communities. The program aims to help universities and nonprofits that rely on open-source software but lack specialist security staff. Onboarding for eligible institutions begins in August 2026.
