Lutnick Halts Anthropic AI Exports Over Military Risk

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick ordered Anthropic to halt global access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models. This action came from fears the technology could be used by military or intelligence organizations in China, Russia, and other countries. Lutnick outlined these concerns in a June 13 letter to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. He directed the company to suspend exports of the models to all foreign nationals worldwide. This prompted Anthropic to disable access for all users while negotiations continue. What's interesting is that the government believes a safeguard in Fable 5, designed to prevent its use in identifying software vulnerabilities, can be bypassed. Anthropic disputes the severity, stating the method exposed only minor weaknesses and other public AI models have similar functions. The bottom line is that Commerce officials are seeking assurances these models cannot threaten U.S. interests, while Anthropic works to restore its flagship AI systems.
