MCP Stateless Updates: Scaling AI Agent Infrastructure

A new Model Context Protocol specification release candidate is here, removing transport-level session management. This means the protocol is now stateless. The original Model Context Protocol, introduced in late 2024, was designed for single client-server interactions. However, Google found it created bottlenecks when scaling across cloud-native infrastructure due to its stateful design. Google, along with Hugging Face and other partners, formed the MCP Transports Working Group to address this. The new 2026-07-28 specification allows MCP to scale on ordinary HTTP load-balanced infrastructure. This is the biggest change to the MCP specification since its launch. This update means more scalable and secure AI agent infrastructure for everyone.
