Meta AI: New Suicide Risk Alerts for Teens

Meta is introducing new safety measures for teens using its AI tools. The company will alert parents if a teen's conversation with Meta AI suggests they may be considering suicide or self-harm. This new "Parent Alerts" feature begins rolling out in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada, expanding globally later this year. If an alert is sent, parents will also receive expert-backed resources. Meta developed a dedicated AI system for this, and every flagged conversation will be reviewed by a human before a notification is sent. Meta is also building the ability to contact first responders if a conversation with Meta AI suggests someone is at imminent risk. This matters because it aims to provide an early warning system and support for teens in distress.
