Meta's Free Facebook Verification: Combatting AI Accounts

Meta is introducing Facebook Verified, a free badge to confirm that a person has completed identity verification through a selfie check. This new feature aims to help users distinguish between real people and AI-generated accounts. The company states the goal is to provide a clear signal when interacting on Marketplace, dating profiles, or in Group conversations. Users record a short video selfie, which Facebook then checks against existing profile photos. This verification process is free and takes only a few minutes. To qualify, users must be 18 or older and their account must be in good standing with Facebook’s Community Standards. Accounts showing signs of inauthentic behavior are not eligible. The badge will appear on profiles, in Marketplace, Dating, and Groups, and will later extend to Feed posts. This initiative matters because it helps users trust their online interactions.
