Microsoft AI: Why Anthropic is a bigger threat than OpenAI

Microsoft's AI chief, Mustafa Suleyman, says his team is more focused on competing with Anthropic than with Google, Meta, or even OpenAI. This is because Anthropic's push into business software and coding tools directly threatens Microsoft's core corporate business. Suleyman explained this focus at Microsoft’s Build developer conference. He stated that Microsoft is concentrated on enterprise use cases, developers, and coding. What's interesting is that this shift comes after Anthropic released its AI coding tool, "Cowork." This tool allows employees to automate complex business tasks and generate code without programming skills. Its launch caused a Wall Street sell-off and fears that Anthropic could replace traditional enterprise software. In response, Microsoft has unveiled seven new AI models. One is an advanced "reasoning" model designed to match Anthropic's Opus 4.6 coding capabilities. Another is an "ultra-efficient" coding model for its GitHub developer platform. The bottom line is Microsoft is building its own top-tier AI models, aiming for self-sufficiency, even while partnering with OpenAI. This effort is crucial for Microsoft to maintain its dominance in the corporate software market.
