Moonshot AI Kimi K3: China's AI Model Goes Open Source

Moonshot AI is set to release its Kimi K3 model for public download. This move aims to expand its reach in the global open software community. The Beijing-based company will release the model’s weights on Monday. This allows developers to download, tweak, and host the technology freely. Founder Yang Zhilin wants to gain users by focusing on openness and greater availability compared to competing US proprietary systems. Kimi K3's initial announcement and benchmark performance caused a sell-off in AI-related stocks this month. It showed that Chinese-made models are closing the gap on American leaders like OpenAI. This release may also boost business for cloud AI computing providers. Moonshot’s daily sales have surged at least sixfold since K3’s debut. The company is now seeking new funding at a US$50 billion valuation. This comes ahead of a potential Hong Kong initial public offering. A White House official recently accused Moonshot of training K3 on banned Nvidia chips. K3 was developed with 2.8 trillion parameters, making it the world's largest open-weight model. It also features a one-million-token context window. This development highlights the increasing competition and innovation in the global AI landscape.
