Moonshot AI Releases Kimi K3 Weights: Open-Weight AI Debate

Moonshot AI, the Chinese company, has released the model weights for its Kimi K3 model. This allows users to access the open-weight model for their own uses. Hugging Face noted that both the code repository and model weights are under the Kimi K3 License. This license grants permission to deal with the software, including model weights and training code, without restriction. However, there's a key condition: if a user operates the model as a service business and earns over 20 million U.S. dollars in 12 months, they must enter an agreement with Moonshot AI. Kimi K3 was stated to be the first open model to reach 2.8 trillion parameters. It also features a 1 million-token context window. This move sparks debate on how Chinese open-weight models might compete with closed U.S. models by offering more accessibility and lower costs.
