Moonshot AI's Kimi K3: $35B Creator, Nvidia Impact

A Chinese AI model that caused a significant drop in Nvidia's market value has now made its creator worth 35 billion dollars. The startup, Moonshot AI, recently closed a 3.5 billion dollar funding round. This follows the launch of its Kimi K3 model earlier this month. Here's the thing: the Kimi K3 model, with 2.8 trillion parameters, is described as the largest open-weight AI system ever released. Its debut triggered a broad selloff in AI semiconductor stocks, impacting companies like Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom, and Micron. Nvidia's valuation decreased from over 5.1 trillion to around 4.7 trillion dollars. What's interesting is that Moonshot AI is reportedly seeking access to Nvidia's Blackwell GPUs to develop its next-generation Kimi K4 model. This comes as U.S. officials are scrutinizing Moonshot over allegations that Kimi K3 was trained using restricted Nvidia chips and partly relied on AI model distillation.
