Moonshot AI's Kimi K3: New AI Shakes Global Markets

A Beijing-based AI startup called Moonshot AI has unveiled its new Kimi large language model. This model, named K3, promises performance close to Anthropic’s Fable 5, which is considered one of the most powerful publicly available models today. What's interesting is that K3 is offered at a fraction of the cost. Moonshot AI claims K3 performed "competitively" with Fable 5 and "substantially outperformed" Anthropic’s Opus 4.8 and OpenAI’s GPT 5.6 Sol. Some independent benchmarks even rank K3 as the best model available. Many observers, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, did not expect a Chinese AI lab to release such a powerful model for another six months. This rapid development highlights how quickly Chinese AI developers are closing the performance gap with U.S. rivals. Moonshot AI has priced K3 at $15 per million output tokens, significantly cheaper than Fable 5’s $50 for the same output. This news seemed to rattle investors, leading to a semiconductor selloff. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company fell by 7%, SoftBank by 9.0%, and Z.ai plunged almost 30%. Fear also spread to U.S. markets, with the Nasdaq 100 down 1.0%, Nvidia shares falling 1.2%, and Meta shares plunging over 2.4%. The bottom line is that this new AI model could significantly shift the landscape of global AI competition and impact investment strategies worldwide.
