Moonshot Kimi K3: World's Largest Open-Weight AI Model

Chinese AI startup Moonshot has unveiled Kimi K3, a 2.8 trillion-parameter model. The company states it is the world's largest open-weight AI system, performing comparably to US giant Anthropic's Fable model. This launch highlights how quickly China's open AI ecosystem is catching up to advanced US systems. Kimi K3 is the first open-weight model to near the 3 trillion-parameter mark. It is designed for advanced reasoning, long-horizon coding, and knowledge work. The model features a 1 million-token context window, allowing it to process much more information in a single prompt. Kimi K3 performed competitively with Fable 5 and significantly outperformed OpenAI’s Opus 4.8 and GPT 5.6 Sol in GPU kernel optimization. Third-party evaluations also show strong results, with Arena.ai ranking it first for web interface-building and Vals AI placing it second overall. Artificial Analysis found its performance comparable to OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 and Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8 for complex, multi-step tasks. Chinese AI firms are accelerating their model releases as the global AI race intensifies. This indicates a significant shift in the competitive landscape for artificial intelligence.
