NUS Embraces AI: ChatGPT & Compulsory Course for Students

The National University of Singapore is making artificial intelligence a formal part of student life. All students, faculty, and staff will receive access to ChatGPT Edu starting August 31st. Here's the thing: Every new undergraduate must also complete a compulsory generative AI course during the first two weeks of the academic year. This initiative is part of a partnership with OpenAI. The goal is to help students build practical skills for using AI in education and future workplaces. What's interesting is that the university plans to work with multiple technology companies, not just one AI provider. This approach aims to give students experience with different AI tools and make access more equitable, as premium platforms can be expensive. More than 7,700 students entering NUS this year began the compulsory course, called ‘Applied Generative AI: From Prompting to Evaluation,’ in July. They must complete the online material and a workshop within the first two weeks of the semester. The bottom line: This move by NUS shows a growing trend in higher education to integrate AI tools and literacy into core curriculum.
