OpenAI, Anthropic Customers Overbilled $1.7M: Billing Errors

Customers of OpenAI and Anthropic have been overbilled an estimated $1.7 million due to billing errors. This comes as many companies use these AI tools to streamline production. A startup called Vaudit, which audits AI bills, reviewed $34 million worth of invoices from 60 companies. They found significant overcharges, mostly with Anthropic's Claude Code, but also involving OpenAI services. The issue could stem from AI agents repeatedly retrying incorrect tasks, leading to continuous charges. However, both Anthropic and OpenAI deny these billing errors, stating they have not seen supporting evidence. What's interesting is that despite these denials, AI providers like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Anthropic, and OpenAI have refunded about 80% of disputed charges after customer complaints. The bottom line is that companies are spending heavily on generative AI, and these billing discrepancies highlight the urgent need for transparent and accurate billing practices in the growing AI market.
