OpenAI Delays ChatGPT 5.6 Release Amid Nat. Security Concerns

OpenAI is reportedly delaying the public release of its latest AI model, GPT-5.6. This comes after the Trump administration requested the company limit initial access to government-approved partners. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman informed employees that GPT-5.6 would first be available only to a limited group of enterprise partners. The government will be approving access customer by customer during this preview period. This request came from the Office of the National Cyber Director and the Office of Science and Technology Policy. A broader public rollout is expected a couple of weeks after this limited preview. This decision follows a similar intervention with rival AI lab Anthropic, where their models were taken offline due to national security concerns. The administration views GPT-5.6 as having advanced cybersecurity capabilities, similar to Anthropic's Mythos model. This marks a significant shift in federal oversight over advanced AI releases in the United States.
