OpenAI Exodus: COO Lightcap & Execs Depart Pre-IPO

High-level executives are continuing to leave OpenAI ahead of its initial public offering. Brad Lightcap, the former chief operating officer, announced his departure on social media platform X, stating he is leaving to start a new business. Lightcap joined OpenAI in 2018 and built many of the company's operational and business functions. He recently stepped down as COO to lead "special projects." His resignation follows other executive departures, including Chloe Bakalar, head of dedicated ethics, and Fidji Simo, former CEO of the business institutional sector. Johannes Heidecke, head of safety systems, and futurist Joshua Achiam have also left. In April, executives from the Sora video generation model team, Srinivas Narayanan, and Chief Marketing Officer Kate Rauch also resigned. While Lightcap's direct impact on company operations may be limited, the ongoing departure of senior executives is a burden as OpenAI prepares to go public. This trend could cause unrest both inside and outside the company.
