OpenAI Expands AI: ChatGPT Work & GPT-5.6 for Productivity

OpenAI has released a set of interconnected updates, expanding its AI productivity tools. The new offerings include the GPT-5.6 model family, which has three tiers: Sol, Terra, and Luna. Sol is the flagship model, Terra balances capability and cost, and Luna focuses on speed and affordability. They also launched ChatGPT Work, an agent that can use apps, work continuously, and create documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and websites. The Codex desktop app is now integrated into a new ChatGPT desktop interface, offering Chat, Work, and Codex as parallel entry points. The original ChatGPT desktop app is now called ChatGPT Classic. This move expands AI capabilities from coding to general-purpose tasks. On the same day, OpenAI also announced that GPT-5.6 will become the preferred model for Microsoft 365 Copilot in applications like Word and Excel. This shows a significant step towards AI-powered office solutions.
