OpenAI: Fidji Simo Steps Down After Medical Leave

Fidji Simo, OpenAI's CEO of AGI deployment, is stepping down from her full-time role to take a part-time advisory position. She made this decision after an extended medical leave for a neuroimmune condition. Simo stated on X that her recovery from a chronic illness is "much longer and more complex than I had anticipated." She joined OpenAI's board in March 2024. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed sadness but gratitude for Simo's contributions. What's interesting is Simo's exit comes as OpenAI plans to go public. Her previous title was CEO of applications, which changed to CEO of AGI deployment to reflect the company's focus on building artificial general intelligence. Her product and business responsibilities will be split among OpenAI President Greg Brockman, CFO Sarah Friar, and Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon.
