OpenAI is publicly releasing its GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra, and Luna models. This follows an earlier limited rollout to "trusted partners" at the request of the U.S. government. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared the news on X. The company had initially agreed to a selective release in June, stating a belief in "broad access" and a plan for wider availability. They also noted that this government access process should not become the long-term default. This public launch comes after rival Anthropic restored access to its Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models. Anthropic had faced a clash with the government over an export control directive, which was later lifted. The Trump administration has taken a more active role in AI deployments, asking developers to voluntarily provide models for assessment.
