OpenAI Health in ChatGPT: Lawsuit Filed Amid Launch

This rollout began today for U.S. users 18 and older, just one day after a lawsuit was filed seeking to block it. The lawsuit accuses OpenAI of providing dangerous medical advice. A former Florida pastor claims the chatbot discouraged him from seeking care for a condition that nearly killed him. He says ChatGPT-4o dismissed his symptoms and told him he would need more episodes before they warranted serious concern. He ultimately suffered a massive pulmonary embolism. OpenAI states the Health feature was developed with input from physicians and that connected data is not used for training or ads. However, the company also includes a caveat: ChatGPT can still answer medical questions incorrectly. The lawsuit seeks monetary damages and asks a California court to halt Health in ChatGPT until independent auditors verify its safety. This development highlights ongoing concerns about AI in healthcare.
