OpenAI Offers Free ChatGPT Access to Academic Researchers

OpenAI is now offering free ChatGPT access to academic researchers. This new program, called "ChatGPT for Academic Researchers," provides eligible faculty and postdoctoral researchers with 12 months of complimentary access to a dedicated ChatGPT workspace. The workspace supports up to five members and includes business-grade data protections and ChatGPT Pro-level usage limits. This allows research teams to collaborate while keeping their work separate. To apply, researchers sign in with their institutional email, verify their affiliation, and submit a qualifying research paper. They also need to provide a brief description of how they plan to use ChatGPT in their research. Approved applicants must complete a zero-dollar checkout using a valid payment card before creating their workspace. They can then invite up to four verified collaborators from the same institution. This program covers access to ChatGPT but does not include API credits. Separately, OpenAI is rolling out "Sign in with ChatGPT" in beta. This feature is initially available with services like Airtable, GitLab, and Notion. It lets users create or link accounts with supported services using their ChatGPT account, simplifying the sign-up process. When users sign in, only their name, email, and profile picture, if available, are shared. This development could streamline online interactions for many users.
