OpenAI Offers Free GPT-5.6 AI Access for Scientists

OpenAI is offering free access to its most powerful AI model, GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, to 100,000 academic scientists. This new program, called ChatGPT for Academic Researchers, opened applications on Wednesday. Qualifying faculty and postdoctoral researchers at high-research-activity institutions can apply now. The first group of 10,000 researchers will gain access this summer. Participants receive a free subscription equivalent to OpenAI's $200-per-month ChatGPT Pro, with higher usage limits and expanded research capabilities. Eligibility requires a paper published within the last three years in specific scientific fields. Approved researchers get access to the full GPT-5.6 model family, including GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, ChatGPT Work, and Codex. They can also invite up to four collaborators. Data privacy is robust, as information shared is not used for model training. This initiative provides powerful AI tools to advance scientific research.
