OpenAI Open-Sources Codex Core Framework: Build AI Agents

OpenAI has open-sourced its core framework for Codex, called Harness. This allows developers to build their own AI agent applications. What's interesting is that Harness powers OpenAI's flagship coding agent. It's released under the Apache-2.0 license, meaning developers can freely modify and commercialize it. They can embed AI agent loops directly into their products, tools, and software. OpenAI President Greg Brockman stated that Codex can do more than just coding tools. This open-source move aims to extend AI agent capabilities into all parts of enterprise operations. Harness is an underlying execution system, not the AI model itself. It handles tasks like understanding, memory retention, tool invocation, and managing exceptions. OpenAI's blog notes it's better to bring the agent directly into software designed for actual work. With Harness optimization, AI agents achieve nearly triple the accuracy and dramatically lower API call costs. The release includes three core components: the codex exec CLI tool, the Codex SDK for programming interfaces, and the Codex app-server. The app-server is critical for maintaining persistent conversations and handling human-in-the-loop approval. This development could significantly change how AI agents are integrated into various applications.
