OpenAI Shuts Atlas, Focuses on New GPT-5.6 Model

OpenAI is shutting down its browser feature, Atlas, which will stop working on August 9, 2026. Users should export or save any important Atlas data before this date. This decision follows the announcement of OpenAI's new ChatGPT model, GPT-5.6. The company plans to focus on ChatGPT as its main feature. Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, aimed to cut down on "side quests," which also led to the closure of Sora. Atlas was designed to help ChatGPT users across the web, understanding tasks and completing them without copying and pasting. James Sun from OpenAI’s product team stated that learnings from Atlas users are being applied to new products. The new GPT-5.6 model promises significant updates, including an in-app browser, a cloud browser, and a side chat feature that works with Codex. This shift emphasizes new capabilities within ChatGPT.
