OpenAI Slashes GPT-5.6 Prices Amid Chinese AI Rivalry

OpenAI is significantly cutting prices for some of its GPT-5.6 models. The GPT-5.6 Luna model will now cost 80% less, and GPT-5.6 Terra will be 20% cheaper. Here's the thing: Luna's price is dropping to $0.20 per million input tokens and $1.20 per million output tokens. Terra will now cost $2 per million input tokens and $12 per million output tokens. These changes come after optimizations led to lower serving costs and better token-generation efficiency. What's interesting is that OpenAI is not changing the price for its flagship GPT-5.6 Sol model. However, Sol is getting a new Fast mode in the API, offering up to 2.5 times faster speeds at double the cost. Also, the Auto-review feature in the ChatGPT app will now use GPT-5.6 Luna, expected to reduce its cost by about ten times. The bottom line: these price reductions reflect growing competition from Chinese AI companies, which are offering powerful models at lower prices. This means developers could see more affordable access to advanced AI tools.
