OpenAI Staff Fund Rival PAC: AI Safety Tensions Emerge

A group of current and former OpenAI employees have donated over $215,000 to a super PAC called Guardrails Alliance. This group advocates for stricter regulations on advanced AI labs. What's interesting is that Guardrails Alliance launched last month with $5 million in initial funding. It aims to counter another pro-AI industry super PAC, Leading the Future, which has over $100 million from tech leaders, including OpenAI cofounder Greg Brockman. Seven current and one former OpenAI employee have contributed to Guardrails Alliance. One of the largest donations, $200,000, came from Juan Felipe Cerón Uribe, a research engineer at OpenAI. He expressed concern that AI research on safety might be wasted without strong guardrails. These donations, though smaller than Brockman's contributions to the pro-AI PAC, highlight growing internal tensions at OpenAI regarding AI policy. This shows a division within the company about how AI development should be regulated.
