OpenAI vs. Anthropic: AI Safety & Political Divide

OpenAI employees are politically aligning with their competitor, Anthropic, rather than their own leadership. This is creating a schism within OpenAI. Here's the thing: OpenAI President Greg Brockman opposed New York congressional candidate Alex Bores. Bores supports states' rights for AI safety regulations. But OpenAI employees gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to Bores and groups backing him. What's interesting is Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and his employees are on the same political page. They both supported Bores and federal AI safety regulation committees. This is according to federal filings from January 2025 to June 2026. Anthropic and OpenAI employees also supported San Francisco congressional candidate Scott Wiener. Wiener's AI labs regulation bill was publicly opposed by OpenAI bosses. The bottom line: This political giving highlights a growing divide on AI safety regulations within the AI industry itself.
