Ox Alpha: Anonymous AI Coding Model Raises Questions

An anonymous provider is offering free access to a new AI coding model called Ox Alpha. No company has publicly claimed to have built it. This model is available on OpenRouter Inc. and OpenCode, with near-unlimited capacity advertised. It accepts text, images, and video, and has a very large context window. Early tests by developer Ben Davis showed impressive scores, even outperforming other known models on some tasks. However, a full test set later showed it performing closer to other models. A developer named "unclecode" used a tool to fingerprint the model's infrastructure. This tool found that Ox Alpha matched GLM-5.3 on six out of nine probes. This suggests shared infrastructure, but not necessarily a shared identity. Chinese AI developer Z.ai Co., which previously previewed models anonymously, is one potential candidate. Another possibility is Xiaomi Corp.'s MiMo team. The terms of use for Ox Alpha are also drawing attention. While OpenRouter's page says prompts are not used for training, broader terms on the site allow for training and evaluation. This matters because users are giving their data to an unknown entity.
