Perfil Sues OpenAI, Microsoft Over AI Content Scraping

Argentine media company Editorial Perfil is suing OpenAI and Microsoft. The lawsuit, filed in Argentina's courts, alleges unauthorized use of its journalism. Perfil claims the companies used its content without permission or payment to develop and train their AI systems. This includes articles, investigations, and interviews, even content behind a paywall. The lawsuit says this was done through large-scale scraping. Perfil accuses the firms of copyright infringement and unfair competition. They argue that Microsoft products like Bing and Copilot use this content to answer user queries directly, reducing traffic to news sites. This practice, Perfil says, cuts into advertising revenue and threatens the financial sustainability of journalism. Perfil notes that OpenAI has licensing deals with some international media groups, but not in the Argentine and Latin American markets. This case is thought to be the first of its kind brought by a Spanish-language media outlet against these tech companies.
