Perplexity & Nvidia Launch Local AI for RTX GPUs

Perplexity and Nvidia have launched a new AI platform called Portable Computer, designed to run directly on your PC or workstation. This new AI agent allows users to handle complex AI tasks on their own hardware, avoiding cloud services and their associated costs. What's interesting is that Portable Computer offers the same user interface and features as Perplexity's original cloud-based platform. While some advanced tasks might still need cloud access, the app will always ask for your permission before sending any data online. Nvidia highlights that local AI is becoming a key productivity tool, moving beyond just hobbyists. This means you can use AI more broadly without worrying about data security or ongoing token expenses. The platform includes agent and orchestrator components, with a choice of Qwen 3.8 or PPLX local models, both scaling to 27 billion parameters. It will also support Nvidia's Nemotron 3.5 Lightning. Benchmarks show Portable Computer performing well in accuracy and speed across various tasks, using fewer tokens than competitors. Portable Computer is available now for Pro, Max, and Enterprise subscribers on Nvidia's DGX Spark and Linux PCs with Nvidia RTX GPUs that have at least 24GB of VRAM. Windows support is expected in September, with the same VRAM requirement. This could mean more secure and cost-effective AI power for many users.
