PIPE-AI: HK PolyU develops AI for diabetes management

A research team at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has developed Hong Kong's first AI agent and risk prediction model for precision diabetes management. This system, called PIPE-AI, is designed specifically for Asian populations. What's interesting is it uses artificial intelligence and local electronic health data to predict the risk of complications, like chronic kidney disease, in type 2 diabetes patients over the next 10 years. This allows for early intervention and improved disease management. The team used 17 years of electronic health records from over 560,000 diabetes patients to develop this AI prediction model, achieving an accuracy rate of 87.1%. They have partnered with local health organizations to recruit patients for a clinical study starting in early July. The bottom line is this technology helps healthcare professionals make earlier clinical judgments and provides personalized risk assessments and health management recommendations, potentially improving outcomes for many.
