Poolside Laguna XS 2.1: Free Open-Weight Coding Model

Poolside has released its latest open-weight coding model, Laguna XS 2.1, as a free download and API tier. This model can handle complex software engineering tasks on a single GPU. Developers using the previous version on OpenRouter must upgrade by July 9, 2026, as the older version will be retired. Laguna XS 2.1 uses a Mixture-of-Experts architecture. It has 33 billion parameters but only activates 3 billion per token during use, allowing it to run on one GPU. This design helps it fit within 16 to 20 gigabytes of VRAM. The new model shows improved performance, climbing 5.4 percentage points on the SWE-bench Multilingual to reach 63.1%. Poolside also open-weighted DFlash speculator models, which speed up local inference. This new release offers a low-friction entry for developers to use a capable agentic coding model.
