Sam Altman's Singularity Claim: Experts Disagree

Sam Altman claims the singularity is here, but many experts disagree. The singularity describes a point where AI improves itself so rapidly, humans can no longer understand or control it. Elon Musk also stated the singularity has arrived, while Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis sees humanity at its "foothills." However, UC Berkeley professor Stuart Russell says we have not reached this point. He points to Altman's own comments about AI systems performing research by March 2028, suggesting the singularity isn't here yet. Russell also disputes Altman's claim from January 2025 about knowing how to build AGI. Roman Yampolskiy, a computer science professor, agrees, stating that rapid progress in AI is not the same as the singularity. He explains that current AI still relies on human-designed elements.
