Snyk Report: Enterprise AI Footprint 3x Larger Than Models

Organizations are building AI systems that combine models, agents, and external tools, rather than relying on standalone AI. A new report from Snyk, which analyzed over 3,000 enterprise environments, found that nearly half of organizations using AI have adopted these "agentic architectures." What's interesting is that the average AI footprint is about three times larger than just the list of models an organization uses. This includes frameworks, servers, databases, and other supporting tools. Many companies are even using AI through third-party services without having declared AI models in their own code. OpenAI remains the most used model provider, but other vendors are gaining ground. Proprietary models make up nearly 64% of deployments, often for complex tasks, while open-source models are used for specialized functions. The bottom line is that organizations need to understand this much broader AI ecosystem to manage risks and dependencies.
