Sony, Warner Sue Anthropic Over AI Copyright Infringement

Sony Music and Warner Music have sued Anthropic, alleging the AI company misused their copyrighted song compositions. They claim Anthropic pirated hundreds of song lyrics and sheet music from artists like The Beatles, Taylor Swift, and Michael Jackson to train its Claude AI models. The lawsuit states Anthropic illegally obtained these materials through torrent downloads. What's more, the complaint alleges Claude can reproduce copyrighted lyrics "verbatim" when prompted. Sony and Warner also say Anthropic used their lyrics to teach Claude to generate "new" AI-generated song lyrics, which compete with their copyrighted works. They are seeking up to $150,000 in damages for each alleged infringed copyright and want a court order to stop Anthropic from using their works. This is part of a growing trend of copyright owners taking action against tech companies over AI training.
