TDOC, AMWL Stocks Dip: OpenAI Links Medical Records to ChatGPT

Shares of telehealth platforms Teladoc Health and American Well Corp slipped on Thursday. This happened the same day OpenAI launched an expanded Health experience inside ChatGPT for U.S. users. This new ChatGPT feature allows users to securely connect personal health data. This enables more personalized responses to everyday health questions. At the time of writing, Teladoc shares were down 3%, while American Well Corp shares had declined 8%. More than 300 million people already use ChatGPT for health-related queries every week. With this update, users can optionally link Apple Health, supported medical records from U.S. hospital systems, One Medical, or Function Health. This means ChatGPT can reference details like medications, lab trends, and activity across conversations. OpenAI states connected information receives additional encryption and is never used to train models or target ads. Users can also disconnect this data at any time. What's interesting is this feature overlaps with services offered by telehealth platforms like Teladoc and Amwell. These companies provide virtual care networks for accessing clinicians and reviewing records. A patient who can get answers from ChatGPT might delay or skip a paid virtual consultation. This development could impact the demand for traditional telehealth services.
