Thoughtworks: AI Speeds Up Cyberattacks, No 'Magic Malware'

Artificial intelligence is speeding up existing cyberattacks, not creating entirely new threats. This is according to a top cybersecurity executive at Thoughtworks. Here's the thing: Large language models, or LLMs, are amplifying current security problems. They allow attacks to be chained together and executed autonomously, much faster than human-led processes can respond. While there's no "magic AI malware," organizations are facing the same types of attacks, but at much greater speeds. What's interesting is that AI coding tools are now in the hands of users without software engineering backgrounds. This means organizations need to provide safe environments for experimentation to prevent what's called "shadow AI." The bottom line is that defenses must be able to react at the same speed as these accelerated attacks.
