The Donald Trump administration is considering creating an independent regulatory body to review the security of artificial intelligence models. This plan comes after Silicon Valley executives expressed concerns about recent US actions to slow the adoption of advanced AI systems. The proposed body would be similar to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, or FINRA, and would operate under the US Securities and Exchange Commission. This initiative is being developed with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and is currently under review by White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. One source indicates that Trump himself has not yet reviewed the plan. This new mechanism aims to give industry representatives a more significant role in developing AI security standards. The US government recently restored access to the Mythos 5 AI model for several US security agencies after previously blocking it, along with the Fable 5 model, for national security reasons. This matters because artificial intelligence is a key part of maintaining the US's technological edge, economic competitiveness, and national security.
