Trump Official: China's Moonshot AI Stole from Anthropic

A top White House tech official, Michael Kratsios, alleges China’s Moonshot AI stole from Anthropic's advanced AI model, Fable. He says Moonshot AI used this to develop its K3 release. Kratsios stated Moonshot AI "distilled Anthropic’s Fable" for K3. He calls this a "large-scale, covert industrial distillation" to steal US technology. The official also noted Moonshot AI acquired powerful Nvidia AI chips, GB300s, and used them in Thailand, likely for training. This follows a previous report in February about another Chinese AI startup, DeepSeek, using advanced Nvidia chips, potentially violating export controls. The US State Department has reportedly pushed to highlight widespread efforts by Chinese companies, including Moonshot AI, to steal intellectual property from US AI labs. Distillation involves training smaller AI models using output from larger, more expensive ones to cut costs. Moonshot AI recently unveiled Kimi K3, which it claims is the world's largest open-weight AI system, with performance nearing Anthropic’s Fable model. This comes after Anthropic’s Fable and Mythos models were withdrawn by the US government due to security concerns. This situation shows the ongoing tension and competition in the global AI landscape.
