UAE Agentic AI: Who's Accountable When AI Decides?

The United Arab Emirates is moving forward with a national program to convert half of its federal government operations to agentic AI models within two years. More than 100 federal officials recently attended a workshop to launch this strategic track. What's interesting is the UAE has been an early adopter of AI for nine years, even creating the world's first ministerial post for artificial intelligence. They've already built significant digital infrastructure. The current challenge is deciding which government tasks can be fully handed over to AI. Officials discussed implementation priorities, timelines, and began building frameworks to classify tasks. The program focuses on seven pillars, including strategy, policies, and government performance. The guiding principle is "human leads, AI enables." However, the project's initial announcement described systems that would run an independent series of actions without human intervention. The frameworks aim to bridge this gap between autonomous execution and human primacy. The bottom line: While the UAE is pushing forward with agentic AI, the crucial question of accountability for an AI's decision, especially when it goes wrong, remains unanswered.
