UCT's MzansiLM: AI Model for All SA Languages

Researchers at the University of Cape Town have developed a new AI language model that understands all 11 official South African languages. This is a major step forward for local AI. Here's the thing: global AI systems often struggle with South African languages like isiNdebele and Sepedi. They give inaccurate results because they simply don't have enough training data. This new model, called MzansiLM, aims to fix that. What's interesting is the UCT team, led by Anri Lombard and Dr. Jan Buys, created a special dataset called MzansiText. They used this data to train MzansiLM from scratch. This makes it the first publicly available model to support all 11 languages in one system.
