UMS Delays ChatGPT Edu Access: Now Expected This Month

The University of Maine System has delayed system-wide access to ChatGPT Edu, which was originally set for July 1st. Here's the thing: The system announced a two-year agreement with OpenAI on May 15th, intending to provide ChatGPT Edu to students, faculty, and staff. An email from Ryan Low, Vice Chancellor for Finance, stated that everyone would have access through their UMS account. However, July 1st passed without the tool becoming available. What's interesting is that on August 4th, Low sent an email to faculty and staff, confirming that ChatGPT Edu will be available this month. The UMS IT team has been testing the tool and its integration. Users will receive detailed information on migrating existing content to a new, FERPA-compliant UMS ChatGPT Edu account. UMS will also offer free training and professional development sessions for employees this fall, with student-specific resources also in development. The first year of the two-year contract is funded by unbudgeted revenue from investment income, with no new student fees. The bottom line is that while the launch was delayed, access is now expected later this month, impacting how students, faculty, and staff will use AI tools.
