Unlicensed Sites in AI Insurance Advice: Study Reveals Risks

Unlicensed websites are appearing thousands of times in AI-generated insurance search results for Australian consumers. New research shows these sites lack Australian Financial Services Licences, or AFSLs. Somantra, a Sydney-based platform, published a study on this issue. They examined over two million citation records from Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT's standard search. The study found 38 domains were confirmed as spam or "parasite SEO" operators. These sites simulate legitimate financial guidance but generate revenue through AI citations. None had an AFSL or a verifiable Australian business presence. There's a big difference between platforms. These grey-area domains made up nearly 2% of ChatGPT citations, but only 0.1% of Google citations. One domain alone was cited over 5,000 times in ChatGPT's insurance responses. This matters because consumers using AI for financial advice might be getting information from unreliable sources.
