US AI Investment Soars: $109B in Funding, 81% Global Share

The United States has significantly widened its lead over Europe in private AI investment. American private AI funding reached $109.1 billion in 2024, representing about 81% of all global private AI funding. From 2013 to 2024, the US saw approximately $470 billion in cumulative private AI investment, compared to Europe's roughly $50 billion. US institutions also created 40 notable AI models in 2024, while Europe produced three. Generative AI investment climbed from $21.8 billion in 2023 to $25.4 billion in 2024. By early 2026, 43% of US workers reported using AI tools, compared to 32% in surveyed European nations. Europe is responding with a €10 billion plan to establish seven AI gigafactories, with deployment set for August 2026. The EU's AI Act, the world's most comprehensive AI regulatory framework, also went into effect in 2024. This shows a clear divergence in AI development and strategy between these major global players.
