US Restores Anthropic AI Access After Security Ban

The US has authorized Anthropic to restore access to its Mythos 5 AI model for approximately 100 trusted organizations. This reverses a national security ban imposed just two weeks earlier. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick informed Anthropic that these organizations, including federal agencies and private sector entities, can now regain access. Anthropic stated that Mythos 5, their strongest cybersecurity model, can be redeployed to US organizations that operate and defend critical infrastructure. The model is designed to identify cyber vulnerabilities and support defensive cybersecurity operations. The initial restriction two weeks ago also suspended access to Anthropic's consumer model, Fable 5, which remains under restriction. This decision by the Commerce Department is the first significant easing of AI export controls since the administration began scrutinizing advanced AI models for national security implications. This matters because it shows a shifting landscape in how the government manages access to powerful AI technologies.
