Visa & ChatGPT: AI Agents to Autonomously Shop

Payments giant Visa is integrating its global financial network directly into ChatGPT. This partnership with OpenAI will allow artificial intelligence agents to autonomously purchase goods and services for consumers. This collaboration was announced at the Visa Payments Forum in San Francisco. OpenAI provides the communication and decision-making technology, while Visa handles transaction authorization, tokenization, and fraud monitoring. The feature will include security guardrails like spending limits and required approvals to prevent unauthorized spending. According to Jack Forestell, Visa's chief product and strategy officer, the focus is on ensuring trusted, secure, and seamless transactions as AI agents become active participants in the economy. This new system follows OpenAI's retirement of its previous e-commerce feature, Instant Checkout, due to technical errors and low merchant adoption. The system aims to build user reliance, eventually allowing consumers to bypass manual confirmations for transactions. This development could significantly change how consumers interact with online shopping.
