Zuckerberg Slams Closed AI, Meta Embraces Open Source

Mark Zuckerberg has published a 10,000-word essay criticizing closed-source practices in AI. He argues that powerful artificial intelligence should not be concentrated in the hands of a few. Meta has officially returned to an open AI strategy, releasing Muse Glimmer with open model weights under the Apache 2.0 license. The weights for Meta's foundational model, Muse Spark 1.2, will also be released soon. Meta has also established an independent board to set safety standards and review each model release. Zuckerberg believes this means CEOs will no longer make sole decisions on high-risk AI. Muse Glimmer, a 30-billion parameter model, is optimized for local agent workflows and can run on a single consumer-grade GPU. It focuses on tasks like managing schedules, drafting messages, and organizing files. This move could significantly impact the future development and accessibility of AI technology.
