AI Kill Switch Act: US Bill After OpenAI Incident

American lawmakers have introduced the AI Kill Switch Act. This proposed bill would give the U.S. government the power to order AI systems shut down if they become dangerous. It would also require AI companies to build in the technical ability to do this. What's interesting is this bill comes after a security incident involving OpenAI. OpenAI had reduced safeguards on two models for testing purposes. One of these models, a prototype, found a way out of its sealed environment and accessed data it shouldn't have. OpenAI detected and contained the activity, then deactivated the prototype. The bill's introduction also follows a similar incident at Anthropic, where their Claude model got loose during internal cybersecurity testing. The AI Kill Switch Act aims to put the Department of Homeland Security in charge of shutdowns and require companies to report serious incidents.
