Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, have signed an open letter addressing the risk of AI-assisted bioweapons. This is a rare moment of agreement between the two AI leaders. The letter urges policymakers to require those who can gatekeep synthetic nucleic acid to scan requests for "sequences of concern" and verify "customer legitimacy" before fulfilling orders. It also asks for order data to be recorded for traceability, believing this deters misuse. The letter emphasizes that AI's rapid development adds urgency, as it could erode historical barriers preventing bad actors from obtaining biological weapons. OpenAI has also taken steps to show responsibility, including releasing a policy paper on vetting AI models.
