Alibaba Qwen: World's Most Downloaded Open AI Model

Alibaba's Qwen has become the world's most-downloaded open AI model family. Its cumulative global downloads have topped 3 billion, surpassing models from Meta and Google. What's interesting is that a report from AI platform Hugging Face shows Qwen models recorded about 2.045 billion downloads on their platform. This compares to about 418 million for Google's models and 227 million for Meta's. These figures only cover Hugging Face downloads, not other platforms. Alibaba has released over 460 Qwen models as open source, leading to more than 300,000 derivative models. On Hugging Face alone, developers have created 151,448 models derived from Qwen. This is 2.6 times the number from Meta models and 4.7 times those from the Llama family. The bottom line is that this highlights a shift in the global open-source AI race, with Chinese models building large developer ecosystems and challenging US dominance.
